At Birchwood Avenue Primary School, curriculum-based music education is taught to all classes by Mr Jon Pettifer, peripatetic music specialist from the Hertfordshire Music Service. Lessons are 40 minutes per week plus a whole school singing assembly. Reception children initially learn music in their classroom with Miss Warner and are introduced to Mr Pettifer's lessons in the summer term. The school regularly prepare and perform together for events such as Harvest Festival celebrations, Christmas carol concerts, choir recitals and plays.
In addition, Years 2-4 learn to play djembe drums with Mr Risenga Makondo for one term each year. They very much enjoy putting on performances of their progress for the community to come along to!
We offer a wide range of musical tuition opportunities through our close links with the Hertfordshire Music Centre which shares our school site. This includes: trumpet, violin and saxophone lessons, in addition to the curriculum opportunities. These lessons are for small groups or individuals, and the children are encouraged to take music grades as and when they are ready. The lessons are offered to the children at the rate set by the Music Service, and their are concessions available for families in receipt of pupil premium. Please ask in the office for details.
