Phonics

Phonics is the early teaching of reading and writing. Children in Reception are taught letter sounds and how to segment (sound out) and blend (push sounds together) to read words. Alongside learning sounds they will learn letter formation (how to write the letter) to start writing words and short sentences.

At Birchwood Avenue, we follow the Read Write Inc (RWI) phonics scheme. Your child will take part in a phonics lesson every day and take home reading books to share with a grown up that link to their current learning.

Please take a few moments to watch the video below to familiarise yourself with correct pronunciation for each of the sounds and ways to support your child reading at home. Your support is invaluable and makes a huge impact on your child's reading progress. Just 5-10 minutes reading with your child per day at home will help them soar.
